Little is known about Emile Ratez, though he was director at the Lille branch of the Paris Conservatoire and had a number of his compositions published. His Six Pièces Caractéristiques are a charming set of works for intermediate double bass and introduce players to a variety of different playing styles whilst standing up as quality works in their own right. Presented here is the second piece in the set, the Cantabile, which features a beautiful melody with an agitato middle section. This edition includes Cathy Elliott’s fingering and bowing suggestions.

Cathy Elliott

Cathy Elliott is well-known as a professional double bassist and pedagogue. She was one of the pioneer teachers of young children on the small instruments that became available in the 1980s, and has written a large amount of beginner chamber music for double bass. She performs regularly with many of London’s professional orchestras.
