Ciprian Porumbescu is sadly little-known outside of his native Romania, but this gem of a piece is certainly one that is worth discovering. Originally written for violin and orchestra but here arranged for double bass and piano by Petru Iuga, Balada is a romantic showpiece that is showy yet serious. Petru Iuga

Petru Iuga first learned double bass in his native Romania before going on to study at the International Menuhin Music Academy and later the Hochschule der Künste-Bern and the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique in Paris. He currently teaches at the University of Music and Arts in Mannheim and performs regularly as a soloist.
