One of Gabriel Fauré’s most popular works, Après un Rêve was written in the 1870s and published in 1878. Originally composed for voice and piano, the song tells the story of a dream in which two lovers escape earthly life and drift toward the light, before the dreamer awakens longing to return to that imagined world.
The poem was originally written in Italian by an anonymous author and later adapted into French by Romain Bussine.
