Robert Schumann

1810-1856

Robert Schumann is widely regarded as one of the most important composers of the Romantic era. He originally intended to pursue a career in law, quitting to become a virtuoso pianist, though a hand injury prevented him from pursuing performance and he instead turned to composition. He was equally well respected as a critic, and through his influence many composers such as Brahms were brought into the public musical sphere.
