Marc-Antoine Charpentier

Marc-Antoine Charpentier (c.1643–1704) was a French composer known for his mastery of both sacred and secular music. Trained in Rome under Giacomo Carissimi, he brought Italian influences to France, composing for the duchesse de Guise, Louis XIV’s court, Molière’s theater, and later the Jesuits. Appointed maître de musique at Sainte-Chapelle in Paris, he produced notable liturgical works, including the Mass Assumpta Est Maria. His 28-volume autograph manuscripts are preserved at the Bibliothèque nationale de France.
