Giovannino del Violone
Very little is known about Giovannino del Violone, the composer of at least one sonata and possibly two others which were deposited at the library of the Music Faculty, University of Oxford, in the late seventeenth century. Some research has shown that Giovannino may have been the Spanish cellist Giovanni Lorenzo Lulier, who spent most of his working life in Rome and was there as late as 1699. However, it is not known whether this connection is genuine. Regardless of their origin, the three pieces now attributed to Giovannino del Violone are charming examples of early music for the violone, which at the time was likely a large string bass instrument (but not one that played at 16” pitch).
