Difficulty: Virtuoso

Serge Koussevitzky’s Double Bass Concerto is undoubtedly one of the most famous concertos ever written for the instrument. Written in 1902, this work came about when Koussevitzky was first becoming popular as a soloist, though at the time there was a scarcity of solo works for the double bass. There is some debate over whether Koussevitzy wrote his concerto alone or with the help of Glière; some argue that Koussevitzky turned to his friend for help in orchestrating the work, though others insist that he worked alone. In this edition, Koussevitzky’s own piano reduction has been used, with some minor edits for practicality.
