Gioachino Rossini’s Une Larme is a favourite amongst double bassists. The title translates as ‘a tear’, and we can really hear the sorrow in this poignant short work. There is some confusion as to whether this piece was originally written for double bass at all, but the two surviving manuscript sources make it explicitly clear that it is not a cello piece, unlike the later set of variations on the same theme that was written for cello.
